How We Are Fed

May we light each day an offering fire of gratitude. May we pass each day an offering through the purifying Holy Fire.

May we treat the sacrifice and ritual dismemberment of our offering with greatest sanctity and respect, a caress of blessing and praise on our fingers as we hold the onion, the potato, the fragrant herb to the chopping block of our kitchen counters and the sacred blades of our knife drawers.

As we ceremonially separate the yielding flesh of each tender, ephemeral mushroom (how they shrink when they are cooked!), may we bow our heads in reverence and awe for the Miracle of Life through Death, the devouring Queen Herself, who consumes and transmutes and nourishes each and All.

After we have sent the offering through the purification of Her Holy Fire, anointed with sacred oil, as we place it on our altar plates, let us thank Her for sharing her immortal flame with us in the form of our inner fire, capable of the miracle of digestion — Spirit joining with Matter — transubstantiation in our own guts.

May we cook and eat and prepare food with certain knowledge that the sustenance we take is intimately the same as the highest of offerings to Her, as She is immanent in each participant in the divine act: chef, meal, and hungry guest.

As She accepts our humble offerings, so we are fed.
